Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Sunday strongly condemned the targeted assassination of Iran’s Supreme Leader Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, calling it “despicable” and urging immediate efforts to protect Indian citizens in the affected regions.

In a post on X, she said, "The targeted assassination of the leadership of a sovereign nation by the so-called leaders of the democratic world and the killing of multitudes of innocent people is despicable and deserves strong condemnation, no matter what the proclaimed reason for it is."

She described the situation as tragic, noting that “multiple nations have now been dragged into conflict” and stressed, "The world needs peace, not more unnecessary wars." Citing Mahatma Gandhi, she added, "Those in charge of it would do well to remember Mahatma Gandhi's words: An eye for an eye makes the whole world blind."

Taking a swipe at Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Priyanka Gandhi said, "I do hope that having genuflected before the Prime Minister of Israel and President Trump, our Prime Minister makes every effort to bring all Indian citizens in the affected countries back home to safety."

Earlier, the Congress had slammed the government’s response to the escalating conflict in Iran, calling it a “betrayal of India’s values, principles and interests.” The party expressed concern over India’s foreign policy approach, saying the nation is paying a heavy price for both its substance and style.

The killing of the 86-year-old Ayatollah Khamenei occurred in a major air strike targeting his compound in downtown Tehran, reportedly carried out by Israel and the United States. Following the attack, the US urged the Iranian public to “seize control of their destiny” and rise against the Islamic leadership that has ruled the country since 1979.

The Congress called on the Indian government to act swiftly to help end hostilities in the region and ensure the safety of all Indian nationals in the Middle East.
