President Droupadi Murmu on March 30 bestowed the prestigious Bharat Ratna award upon distinguished individuals during a ceremony at the Rashtrapati Bhavan. The names are former Prime Ministers Chaudhary Charan Singh, PV Narasimha Rao, former Bihar Chief Minister Karpoori Thakur, eminent agricultural scientist MS Swaminathan.
The four people have been awarded the country's highest civilian honour posthumously.

PV Prabhakar Rao, PV Narasimha Rao's son, received the award on his behalf while Chaudhary Charan Singh's grandson Jayant Singh took the prestigious award in Rashtrapati Bhavan. MS Swaminathan's award was received by his daughter Nitya Rao while Karpoori Thakur's son Ram Nath Thakur took the award on his behalf.

About Bharat Ratna
‘Bharat Ratna’, the highest civilian award of the country, was instituted in the year 1954. It is awarded in recognition of exceptional service or performance of the highest order in any field of human endeavour.
On conferment of the award, the recipient receives a Sanad (certificate) signed by the President and a medallion. The Award does not carry any monetary grant, according to Ministry of Home Affairs.
