While speaking about the bill for removal of the PM, CMs and ministers held on serious criminal charges, Union Minister Kiren Rijiju said that despite the recommendation, Prime Minister Narendra Modi did not agree to make an exeption for the post of the Prime Minister.
"PM Modi told the cabinet that the recommendation is to keep the prime minister out of this bill, but he did not agree. PM Modi refused to give an exception to the Prime Minister," he said.
"The PM is also a citizen, and he should not have special protection. Most of the CMs are from our party. If they do something wrong, they have to leave their position. Ethics should also mean something. The Opposition would have welcomed this bill had they kept ethics at the centre," Rijiju added.
Home Minister Amit Shah, on Wednesday, introduced in Lok Sabha three bills for the removal of prime minister, chief ministers and ministers under arrest for 30 consecutive days on serious charges. The introduction of the bills invited fierce protests from opposition MPs who tore up copies of the draft law and marched close to his seat while shouting slogans.
The three bills are the Government of Union Territories (Amendment) Bill 2025; the Constitution (One Hundred And Thirtieth Amendment) Bill 2025; and the Jammu and Kashmir Reorganisation (Amendment) Bill 2025.
The bills have proposed that if the Prime Minister, union ministers or chief ministers are arrested and detained in custody for 30 consecutive days for offences that attract a jail term of at least five years, they will lose their jobs on the 31st day.
