PM Modi becomes first world leader to cross 100 million followers on Instagram

Prime Minister Narendra Modi has become the first serving world leader to reach 100 million followers on Instagram, marking a significant benchmark in global political communication.

Having joined the platform in 2014, Modi’s account has witnessed consistent growth over the past decade. His feed features snapshots from official meetings, overseas tours, outreach programmes, cultural events and occasional personal reflections, building what observers describe as one of the most engaged political audiences online.

With this latest milestone, Modi now leads all global leaders on Instagram by a wide margin. His following is more than twice that of US President Donald Trump, who stands second with 43.2 million followers.

Several other heads of state remain significantly behind in comparison. Indonesian President Prabowo Subianto has 15 million followers, Brazilian President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva has 14.4 million, Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has 11.6 million and Argentine President Javier Milei has 6.4 million. Notably, even the combined follower base of these next five prominent leaders does not surpass Modi’s individual tally.

The Prime Minister’s online footprint is also unmatched within India. Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath is a distant second domestically with about 16.1 million followers, followed by Congress leader Rahul Gandhi, who has approximately 12.6 million. The wide gap underscores Modi’s dominance on visual-first social media platforms among Indian political figures.

Political analysts note that Instagram’s appeal among younger demographics has made it an important arena for direct engagement. The milestone reflects a broader shift in how leaders communicate, increasingly turning to digital platforms to share governance updates and interact with citizens without relying solely on traditional media channels.
