Parliament Monsoon Session Updates: Op Sindoor discussion goes past midnight; PM Modi praises Rajnath, Jaishankar speeches; LS adjourns until 11 am

PM Modi took to social media platform X to praise the speeches given by Defence Minister Rajnath Singh and External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar.

Sharing Singh's speech, PM Modi said that he had provided “an insightful perspective on the success of India’s security apparatus and the courage of our armed forces”.

Modi also praised EAM Jaishankar's speech as “outstanding”. “The speech by EAM Dr Jaishankar Ji was outstanding. He highlighted how the world has clearly heard India’s perspective on fighting the menace of terrorism through Operation Sindoor,” PM said in a post on X.

The Lok Sabha saw discussions on Operation Sindoor till 12.51 am with the last speech of Kerala Congress leader Shafi Parambil saying Defense Minister Rajnath Singh claimed  none of our key assets were damaged. Parambil, however, referred to Chief of Defense Staff Anil Chauhan who said we lost few planes in Bloomberg interview. Who is suppressing facts, he asked.

Reacting to EAM S Jaishankar's statement on Operation Sindoor in Parliament, Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on Monday said that certain points were left unclear regarding the alleged involvement of the United States in the cessation of hostilities between India and Pakistan.

4. “Not yielding to nuclear black mail.”

5. “Terror and good-neighbourliness cannot co-exist; blood and water cannot flow together.”

“[When the] Doklam crisis was on, the Leader of Opposition decided to get a briefing from whom? Not from the government, not from the MEA (Ministry of External Affairs), [but] from the Chinese ambassador," Jaishankar said.

“He took his briefing from the Chinese ambassador when our military was confronting the Chinese military in Doklam,” he added.

Taking a dig at the Indian National Congress over its “economic thinking of China,” he said, “in 2006, agreed to do a regional trading agreement with China; it was finalised during the visit of President Hu Jintao. A task force appointed gave a positive recommendation through the efforts of various people. This did not happen.”

“The very people who are cautioning us on China are the people who allowed 3G and 4G to come from China. It was this government which made sure there was a made in India 5G,” Jaishankar said.

“The kind of massive deployment that we saw on the China border after 2020, it is because our border infrastructure Budget has gone up four times. Our tunneling, road building and bridging have doubled or tripled. This is a far cry from the period when the thinking was ‘let’s not develop the border, then the Chinese cannot come there.'”

“We had 60 years of neglect of the border…in the last ten years, that neglect has been reversed. There is still a lot of work to be done."

"I went to China to make our position very clear about de-escalation, trade restrictions and terrorism. I did not go to China for the Olympics, I did not go to China for secret agreements," EAM S Jaishankar said about his visit to China following the Pahalgam attack.

"The House should know that people were watching the Olympics when China was issuing stapled visas for people from Arunachal Pradesh and Jammu and Kashmir."

"Tlongest period that Pakistan has been under FATF greylist has been under the tenure of the Modi government. During the Modi government, from 2018 to 2022, [for] 1,576 days, Pakistan was in the greylist," Jaishankar said on reference made to the FATF.

He said Islamabad was in the greylist earlier as well, although “for a shorter period,” and asked the Lok Sabha to “appreciate that the FATF meeting in May 2025 has kept Pakistan in the ‘enhanced follow-up category’ recognising that the compliance of Pakistan is only partial.”

Regarding the controversial IMF loan package cleared for Pakistan this year following the Pahalgam terror attack — an issue the Opposition raised — EAM S Jaishankar said, “the IMF loan, which was given, was approved in September 2024. It was an extended fund facility of $7 billion. The House should know that Pakistan is a ‘serial borrower’ from the IMF…sixteen or seventeen times they have taken…in 2008, Pakistan got a stand-by arrangement of $9.70 billion. In 2013, it got another $5.9 billion dollars. So, the very people who are concerned today at (sic) a $7 billion package, should remember a $15 billion package went through for Pakistan during their tenure.”

During the discussion on Operation Sindoor in the House, Union Home Minister Amit Shah intervened while EAM S Jaishankar and said , "...I have an objection that they (Opposition) don't have faith in an Indian Foreign Minister but they have faith in some other country. I can understand the importance of foreign in their party. But this doesn't mean that all the things of their party should be imposed here in the House."

Highlighting the Pakistan-China collaboration brewing “for 60 years” and criticising the Opposition inaction, External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar said, “In 1966, the first Chinese military supplies went to Pakistan, nuclear collaboration started in 1976, when Bhutto arranged for China-Pakistan to get together. In 1980s, when PM Rajiv Gandhi was visiting China and Pakistan, that is when the nuclear collaboration was at its height; 2005, China-Pakistan Treaty of Friendship and Cooperation; 2006, Pakistan-China FTA; 2013, handing over of Gwadar port (Balochistan, Pakistan) to China; May 2013, announcement of China-Pakistan Economic Corridor (CPEC).”

Slamming the Opposition, EAM S Jaishankar said, “these questions were being asked by the people who thought the best action (during the Mumbai attacks) was inaction.”

Union Minister Piyush Goyal says, "The opposition's attitude today has proved that they are running away from discussion on 'Operation Sindoor' and valour of Indian defence forces. It is very sad that they do not stand with the country."
