External Affairs Minister S Jaishankar on Monday firmly dismissed US President Donald Trump’s claim that he mediated a ceasefire between India and Pakistan, clarifying that there was no conversation between Trump and Prime Minister Narendra Modi during the period in question.
A ceasefire was agreed upon between the two countries on May 10 following four days of military conflict, following India's precision strikes on terror bases and military structures deep inside PoK and Pakistan.
Speaking during the debate on Operation Sindoor in the Lok Sabha, Jaishankar said, “There was no conversation between Prime Minister Modi and President Trump between April 22 and June 17.”
The statement comes after Trump repeatedly claiming he had spoken to both leaders to broker peace following the Pahalgam terror attack and rising border tensions. The government has now categorically denied any such involvement, maintaining that India does not accept third-party mediation on its bilateral issues with Pakistan.
Jaishankar further disclosed that after India carried out retaliatory strikes on Pakistan, New Delhi received calls signaling Islamabad’s readiness to de-escalate. However, India insisted that any such communication must be made officially by Pakistan’s Director General of Military Operations (DGMO).
“After we retaliated to the Pakistan attack, we got phone calls saying Pakistan was ready to stop; but we told them the request has to come from DGMO,” he stated.
The External Affairs Minister also debunked Trump's claim that he brought trade to the table to broker peace between the two countries. "At no stage in our conversations with the US (on Pahalgam attack) was there any conversation about trade," he said.
The Operation Sindoor debate dominated Parliament on Monday, with the Opposition demanding answers about India’s May 7–10 strikes on Pakistan following the April 22 Pahalgam terror attack, which killed 26 civilians.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah and BJP leaders Anurag Thakur and Nishikant Dubey will speak for the government in the Lok Sabha, while Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi will lead the Opposition.
The Rajya Sabha will take up the debate on Tuesday, July 29. Together, both Houses will hold 32 hours of discussion on the issue.
