  • Nishant Kumar, Nitish Kumar's son, set to enter active politics
  • JD(U) to formally announce Nishant's political entry soon
  • Nishant is a BIT Mesra graduate and known for his low profile

Nishant Kumar, son of Bihar chief minister Nitish Kumar, is set to enter active politics after years of staying away from public life.

The announcement regarding the development came from state rural development minister and senior JD(U) leader Shrawon Kumar. The decision is expected to be announced formally by the party soon.

This comes as the state’s political circles are abuzz with speculation that Nitish Kumar may step down from the chief minister’s post after being elected to the Rajya Sabha. The JD(U) chief is likely to file nomination papers for the Rajya Sabha today.

Who is Nishant Kumar?

Nishant Kumar is a software engineer who graduated from the Birla Institute of Technology (BIT), Mesra.

Born on July 20, 1975, to Nitish Kumar and the late Manju Kumari Sinha, he has long been known for maintaining a low public profile and for his interest in spiritual pursuits.

Recent filings place his net worth at around Rs 3.61 crore, largely consisting of assets inherited from his mother.

Nishant Kumar’s political entry

"On the eve of Holi, I have some good news to share with the people of Bihar. It has been some time since there have been demands, from within the JD(U) as well as from among the state's youth, that Nishant, the son of chief minister Nitish Kumar, join politics. Decks have been cleared for that and a formal announcement will be made in a day or two," Shrawon Kumar told PTI.

Asked if Nishant can be sent to the Rajya Sabha, Kumar said, “Anything can happen."

The induction of Nishant Kumar marks a notable departure for Nitish Kumar, who has traditionally taken a stand against dynastic politics. It follows the NDA’s landslide victory in the 2025 Bihar assembly polls and mounting pressure from JD (U) cadres to establish a clear line of succession.

On the few occasions Nishant Kumar has been seen in public, he has impressed people with his modest demeanour. In brief exchanges with the media, he has also indicated that he keeps a close watch on the work carried out by his father, Nitish Kumar.

“I welcome the new generation to enter politics. I thank the CM for leading the NDA in the recent assembly elections. It is a matter of great happiness that Nishant Kumar will now enter politics with the support of the CM and his family, and we wholeheartedly welcome him," industries minister Dilip Jaiswal told PTI Video.

“He is certainly an educated young leader, holding a BTech degree, and is a well-grounded individual. Every event happens in its own time, and perhaps now the right time has arrived. His entry should be warmly welcomed," the former state BJP president stated further.
