
As India gears up to welcome 2026, authorities in major metros have rolled out traffic restrictions, crowd management plans and rules affecting orderly celebrations.
Mumbai
The city is preparing special transport arrangements. Western Railway, Central Railway, Mumbai Metro, and BEST buses will offer extended services throughout the night. With over 17,000 personnel deployed, authorities have issued a set of advisories for revellers heading out on New Year’s Eve. Also, the Mumbai Metro Rail Corporation will run extended services on Metro Line 3 (Aqua Line) from 10.30 pm on December 31 until 5.55 am on January 1. There will also be special trains on the intervening night of December 31 and January 1.
Large gatherings are anticipated at several key locations across the city, including the Gateway of India, Marine Drive, Girgaon Chowpatty, Bandra Bandstand, and Juhu and Versova beaches.
The Maharashtra government has permitted eateries, restaurants, hotels, orchestra bars and pubs to operate till 5 am on January 1.
Delhi-NCR
According to ANI, special road diversions and parking restrictions will take effect across Delhi as authorities prepare for a surge in holiday traffic. The traffic police have issued an advisory announcing restrictions, diversions and special parking arrangements in and around Connaught Place due to anticipated crowds. The measures will be in effect from 7 pm on Wednesday until celebrations conclude.
Joint Commissioner Sanjay Kumar Jain told ANI that extensive deployments have been planned across Delhi.
According to Jain, around 60 party zones, including popular markets, malls and nightlife hubs, have been identified where intensified checking will be carried out.
"Police officials have had separate meetings with owners of nightclubs and restaurants, and have urged them to act as responsible outlets, requesting them not to serve alcohol to underage, stop serving and close at the prescribed time,” he said.
In Noida, similar advisories against roadside parking, uncontrolled gatherings and heavy traffic are in force through Wednesday and Thursday.
In Gurugram, 5,400 police personnel have been deployed, with a focus on drunk driving and crowd management.
Authorities have issued notices to pubs, bars, clubs, restaurants and hotels under Section 168 of the BNSS. They have urged operators responsible for ensuring that intoxicated patrons do not drive and are transported home safely.
Bangalore
According to Times of India, New Year’s Eve events must end by 1 am. Separate approvals are required for sound systems, with noise levels kept within permissible limits. Entry beyond sanctioned capacity is banned, and serving alcohol to minors will invite action.
City Police Commissioner Seemanth Kumar Singh told Times of India that establishments must stop entry once they reach their permitted capacity and clearly display signage stating that no further entry is allowed.
According to reports, vehicular movement will be completely restricted between 8 pm and 2 am on key stretches, including MG Road, Brigade Road, Church Street, Residency Road, Rest House Road, St. Mark’s Road, and Museum Road. Parking on these roads will be prohibited from 4 pm to 3 am.
Chennai
The Chennai’ police have implemented multi-layered security and traffic checks across critical party zones and leisure spots. Roads around beaches like Marina and Elliot’s may see closures starting late on Dec 31 to limit congestion. Meanwhile, firecrackers are banned in public and residential areas unless prior police permission is obtained. Traffic checks at hundreds of locations have been put in place to curb street racing or drunk driving.
Kolkata
A massive security deployment will be in place at key stations, including Park Street, Esplanade, Maidan, Rabindra Sadan, Dum Dum and Dakshineswar. The Metro has also deployed additional women Railway Protection Force (RPF) personnel to assist women and children amid the anticipated rush.
According to Indian Express, Quick Response Teams (QRTs) and standby emergency teams will be stationed to deal with any medical or security emergencies. The Central Control Room will monitor operations through round-the-clock CCTV surveillance, while ropes, loud hailers and queue managers will be used to prevent overcrowding on platforms.
Even Kolkata Metro announced extended services to ensure smooth movement and public safety across the city's busiest corridors.
Based on the directions of city Police Commissioner Manoj Kumar Verma, restrictions will be placed on several major thoroughfares on December 31, 2025, and January 1, 2026.
