With the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) securing a sweeping mandate in the Bihar Assembly elections, Chirag Paswan, Union Minister and leader of the Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas), said the alliance partners were already engaged in discussions to finalize the structure of the next government. He stated that the formation process would not extend beyond November 22.
“It will be done soon. Discussions are going on. A sense of clarity will come on the blueprint of the government. I think by tonight, I will also speak with senior Union Ministers, and the blueprint will be ready by today or tomorrow. We have to form the government before 22nd November. It will be done,” he told reporters on Sunday.
Meanwhile, NDTV reported citing sources that Nitish Kumar will continue as the Chief Minister of Bihar, with the new National Democratic Alliance (NDA) government expected to be formed within the next three days. The cabinet-sharing arrangement was finalised during a meeting between Kumar and Home Minister Amit Shah, according to sources cited in the report.
The swearing-in ceremony is likely to be held on Wednesday or Thursday, subject to Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s availability, it has been learnt from the report.
Preparations have, meanwhile, begun at Gandhi Maidan in Patna for the event, which will mark Kumar’s tenth term as Chief Minister.
The present Bihar Legislative Assembly’s term officially ends on November 22, 2025. The coalition achieved a resounding victory, claiming 202 out of 243 seats in the House -- its second time crossing the 200-seat barrier, the first being in 2010 when it secured 206 seats.
In this election, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) surged ahead to become the largest party with 89 seats, while the Janata Dal (United) (JD(U)) followed closely with 85. The smaller partners of the ruling front performed impressively as well. The Lok Janshakti Party (Ram Vilas) (LJP(RV)) clinched 19 seats, the Hindustani Awam Morcha (Secular) (HAMS) secured five, and the Rashtriya Lok Morcha (RLM) picked up four. Together, these results contributed to what Paswan described as a sweeping mandate that left little space for the opposition.
The RJD-led Mahagathbandhan suffered major losses across the state. The bloc managed only 35 seats in total, with the RJD winning 25, the Congress earning six, the CPI(ML)(L) taking two, the Indian Inclusive Party picking up one, and the CPI(M) securing one. Parties outside both main coalitions also had mixed outcomes. The All India Majlis-E-Ittehadul Muslimeen succeeded in bagging five seats, whereas the Bahujan Samaj Party managed just one.
Jan Suraaj, led by Prashant Kishor and widely discussed because of its intense grassroots outreach, failed to register a single win and could not make the breakthrough it had anticipated. As alliance negotiations progress, the NDA’s overwhelming majority -- described by many as a political “tsunami” -- has set the stage for swift government formation, in line with Paswan’s projection that the framework would be settled within a day or two.
