'Nationalists respect each other': Jaishankar on Modi-Trump chemistry

External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, speaking at the Delhi University Literature Festival, reflected on Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s recent visit to the United States and his meeting with former President Donald Trump. He described the interaction as successful, citing strong personal chemistry between the two leaders.

Jaishankar noted that Modi was among the earliest world leaders invited by Trump during his second term, emphasizing that both leaders share a nationalist outlook, which fosters mutual respect. "PM Modi is a very strong nationalist, and he radiates that. Trump is an American nationalist, and I think, in many ways, nationalists respect each other," he said.

He also highlighted Trump’s unique leadership style, pointing out that while the former US president has had a complicated history with some global leaders, his rapport with Modi has remained positive. “There are a lot of other leaders in the world with whom Trump has not necessarily shared a positive history, but in the case of Modi ji, that’s not the case,” Jaishankar remarked.

Jaishankar draws Hanuman analogy to explain diplomacy

Jaishankar used an analogy from the Ramayana to explain the essence of foreign policy and diplomacy. Comparing Hanuman’s mission in Lanka to modern-day diplomacy, Jaishankar highlighted how Hanuman navigated a hostile territory, assessed the situation, and built alliances—all key aspects of foreign relations. "Diplomacy is about maximizing friends, managing coalitions, and working towards a common goal," he said.

Relating this to India’s global strategy, he emphasized the country’s efforts to expand its network of allies despite differing perspectives. "Now, what are we trying to do today in Bharat? We are trying to increase our number of friends, bringing together different countries — even those who may not be on the same page — and working towards a common goal," he said.
