Mumbai Police have tracked down an employee of an ice cream factory in Pune district who had cut his finger during manufacturing process that led to discovery of a human finger in a butterscotch ice-cream cone in the city ordered online by a doctor in Mumbai, according to officials.

The worker, a 24-year-old Pune native named Omkar Pote, was filling ice cream cones at the Fortune Dairy factory in Indapur on May 11 when he lost the tip of his finger.

Pote's DNA samples have been gathered by police and forwarded to the forensic science lab, according to a statement released on Wednesday.

The event came to light on June 12 when an MBBS doctor from Mumbai discovered human flesh and a nail in an internet order for an ice cream cone.

The flesh discovered in the ice cream cone was transported to the forensic science lab in Kalina after the doctor's allegation led to the filing of a case against Yummo ice cream firm managers.

The Malad Police found Pote after the investigation led them to the Indapur ice cream factory.

"Police have collected Pote's DNA samples and sent them to the forensic science laboratory in Kalina to ascertain whether the part of the finger found in the ice cream belonged to him (Pote)," an official said, adding that the police are awaiting a report from the forensic science laboratory.

Fortune Dairy's owner, Manoj Tupe, said that his company is waiting for the results of the DNA test and is assisting with the inquiry.

Tupe stated that the event was not exclusively the fault of their unit because the main firm had contracted with several units, including those in Ghaziabad and Jaipur, to fill ice cream cones. He mentioned that teams from the government have been sent to these areas to conduct additional verification.

"Authorities have dispatched teams to the units in Ghaziabad and Jaipur to verify if a similar incident occurred on that particular date," he claimed.

Tupe further stated that the Fortune Dairy facility in Indapur received a stop-work notice from the Food Safety and Standards Authority of India (FSSAI), following the incident.

The Yummo Ice Creams butterscotch ice cream cone was ordered on June 12 by the doctor, who lives in Malad West. While eating the ice cream, he was shocked to see a half-inch-long chunk of flesh with a nail, according to the complaint.
