Prime Minister Narendra Modi arrived in Washington DC early on Thursday (Indian time) for a two-day visit to the United States, making him one of the first foreign leaders to meet President Donald Trump after his swearing-in as the 47th President of the United States.
Upon his arrival, Modi met with Tulsi Gabbard, the newly-confirmed Director of National Intelligence, US. He congratulated her on her appointment and discussed strengthening India-US relations.
Bilateral Talks and Key Meetings Scheduled
During his 36-hour visit, Modi is scheduled to hold bilateral meetings with President Trump in both restricted and delegation-level formats. According to a report by Mint, before his meeting with Modi, Trump held talks with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu and Japanese Prime Minister Shigeru Ishiba. On Tuesday, he also met with Jordan’s King Abdullah.
Modi will be holding at least six bilateral meetings during his stay, Mint reported. He is staying at Blair House, the US Presidential guest house, located across the road from the White House.
Key Focus Areas in Modi-Trump Talks
The bilateral meeting between Modi and Trump is scheduled to take place at the White House at 4 PM IST on Thursday. Talks are expected to cover key issues, including reducing import tariffs, increasing US energy and defense equipment purchases, and addressing trade-related concerns. The discussions come at a crucial time when trade, defense cooperation, and energy security have become focal points in India-US relations.
Meeting with Elon Musk on the Agenda Apart from his discussions with Trump
Modi is also expected to meet Tesla and SpaceX CEO Elon Musk during his visit. According to Reuters, discussions may include the long-delayed entry of Musk’s satellite internet venture, Starlink, into the Indian market.
