Ladakh Lieutenant Governor (LG) Kavinder Gupta has resigned from his post after serving less than nine months in office. Gupta was appointed as Ladakh’s third LG lat year.
According to reports, Vinai Kumar Saxena, the erstwhile LG of Delhi, is set to replace Gupta while the latter has been appointed as the governor of Himachal Pradesh.
On Thursday, several states saw a change in their Governors as part of a major reshuffle by the Centre. West Bengal, Bihar, Kerala, Telangana, Himachal Pradesh Nagaland, and several other states saw the appointment of new Governors as many of the previous ones resigned while others were transferred.
In West Bengal, CV Ananda Bose stepped down and was replaced by former Tamil Nadu Governor RN Ravi.
Kavinder Gupta’s tenure as LG
Gupta’s tenure came amid growing unrest in the region, with civil society groups such as the Leh Apex Body and the Kargil Democratic Alliance leading protests demanding statehood, Sixth Schedule protections, and job reservations for locals.
The agitation intensified in September 2025 when demonstrations in Leh turned violent, leaving four protesters dead and dozens injured in police firing, forcing authorities to impose curfews and security restrictions.
The protests are part of a wider movement that began after Ladakh was carved out of Jammu and Kashmir in 2019 and placed under direct central administration.
Gupta’s resignation comes amid ongoing political debate and public mobilisation over Ladakh’s governance and constitutional status.
