Karnataka cabinet on February 5 granted in-principle administrative approval for the implementation of an Artificial Intelligence-powered Social Media Analytics Solution aimed at monitoring and countering misinformation, hate speech and other harmful online content.

Speaking to reporters, Minister of Law and Parliamentary Affairs HK Patil said the Home Administration Department had stated that the rapid speed, scale and complexity of digital information have made traditional methods of tackling disinformation increasingly ineffective.

He said AI-driven technologies are now essential to detect and counter digital threats in real time.

According to Patil, the proposed system will analyse content across a wide range of social media platforms, websites, online forums and messaging services, using artificial intelligence to instantly identify and flag harmful narratives.

These include content related to child trafficking, online abuse, extremist recruitment, misinformation and hate speech, among others, he said.

The software will enable faster digital surveillance and threat detection, helping authorities respond more effectively to emerging risks in the online space, Patil added.

The total project cost has been estimated at Rs 67.20 crore. However, the cabinet’s approval is subject to multiple conditions, including verification of technical specifications and costs.

As per the cabinet decision, final approval will depend on verification of detailed technical specifications and associated costs, finalisation of specifications in the Technical Advisory Panel meeting, consultation with the Centre for e-Governance, and finalisation of cost estimates before issuing tenders.

Only after these steps are completed will the government proceed with the tendering process, Patil said.
