Karnataka CM Siddaramaiah on March 6 announced a 9-km pedestrian walkway along Namma Metro viaduct on Bengaluru’s Outer Ring Road (ORR) at an estimated cost of Rs 160 crore.
The project will be taken up under the sponsorship of Outer Ring Road Companies Association (ORRCA) to improve pedestrian connectivity along the city’s major tech corridor, the CM said as he presented the budget for FY27.
The government is undertaking a project to develop ORR stretch from Silk Board Junction to KR Pura Metro Station into a "global-standard corridor" at an estimated cost of Rs 450 crore.
Metro plans
Siddaramaiah said Namma Metro is now the second-largest metro network in the country. The operational network spans 96 km and serves around 10 lakh commuters daily.
“A total of Rs 67,460 crore has been spent on the project, so far, of which the state government’s share is Rs 59,376 crore and the Centre’s contribution is Rs 8,084 crore. The central share accounts for 12 percent while the state share stands at 88 percent,” he said.
The government plans to complete 41 km of additional metro lines in FY27, expected to benefit around 15 lakh commuters every day, the CM said. He did not announce any new metro corridors.
Road infrastructure projects
To reduce traffic congestion in capital city of Bengaluru, the Nelamangala-Tavarekere-Bidadi Intermediate Ring Road will be constructed using resources from the Bangalore Metropolitan Region Development Authority (BMRDA) and local planning authorities.
The state government is also moving ahead with the 73-km Bengaluru Business Corridor Phase-1 from Tumakuru Road to Hosur Road. “Land acquisition for the project is progressing rapidly, with compensation being distributed to farmers on priority. The corridor is targeted to be completed within four years,” he said.
The North-South Corridor project from Hebbal Junction to HSR Layout Silk Board and the East-West Corridor project from KR Pura to Mysuru Road, covering a total of 40 km of tunnel roads, have been approved at an estimated cost of Rs 40,000 crore under the BOOT (Build-Own-Operate-Transfer) model. In the first phase, tenders have been invited for the 17-km North-South Corridor project at a cost of Rs 17,780 crore.
In addition, a tunnel road and an elevated road from Hebbal Junction to Mehkri Circle will be constructed by the Bangalore Development Authority at an estimated cost of Rs 2,250 crore.
Water supply projects
The CM said around 1.4 crore people in Bengaluru are being supplied 2,225 MLD of drinking water through Phases I to V of the Cauvery Water Supply Project. The government has now formulated the Cauvery Phase VI project at a cost of Rs 6,939 crore with assistance from the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) to supply an additional six TMC of water to the city.
