Two sisters who were scheduled to get married on Saturday were found dead hours before their wedding celebrations in Jodhpur, police said, according to a report by the Times of India.

The deceased, identified as Shobha, 25, and Vimla, 23, were residents of Manai village and worked as teachers at a private school. According to officials, wedding-related celebrations continued at their home until late Friday night.

ADCP (West) Roshan Meena said the sisters went to their room around midnight to sleep. Their condition suddenly worsened around 4am, after which family members rushed them to a private hospital in Jodhpur.

Hospital doctors declared both women dead on arrival.

Following the incident, the family brought the bodies back home and began preparations for the last rites without conducting a postmortem. When the information reached police, officers arrived at the house around 6am and halted the cremation process.

Police then sent the bodies to the MGH mortuary for autopsy before handing the remains back to the family.

A preliminary probe suggests the sisters may have consumed a poisonous substance, though authorities have not confirmed the exact cause of death. Investigators are awaiting the postmortem report to determine the final reason behind the deaths. No suicide note was recovered till late Saturday, police said.
