Several students, including office-bearers of the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union (JNUSU), have been identified and named in connection with the raising of allegedly objectionable slogans during a recent protest inside the campus, a report by News18 said on January 7.
The move follows the university administration’s decision to approach the police, contending that the sloganeering was provocative, inflammatory and amounted to contempt of the Supreme Court.
Those identified from the JNUSU leadership include president Aditi Mishra, vice-president Gopika K Babu, joint secretary Danish Ali and general secretary Sunil, the report said.
In addition, the university has listed several other students associated with various Left student organisations, including Saad Azmi, Pakeeza Khan, Shubham, Kanishk Shashank and Mehmood Ilahi, according to the report.
The protests were against the denial of bail by the Supreme Court to Umar Khalid and Sharjeel Imam in the Delhi riots case.
Earlier, the Delhi Police had said that a complaint has been received from the chief security officer of the university at Police Station Vasant Kunj North regarding an incident of sloganeering against Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Union Home Minister Amit Shah on the university campus.
Police officials said the complaint is currently under review to determine the appropriate course of legal action.
"A complaint from the Chief Security Officer, JNU, was received at PS Vasant Kunj North in connection with sloganeering against the Prime Minister and the Union Home Minister on the JNU campus. The same is being examined for necessary action," Delhi Police said.
Earlier, JNU had requested the police to register an FIR against students who allegedly raised "objectionable, provocative and inflammatory slogans" outside Sabarmati Hostel on Monday night.
