A controversy erupted at Jawaharlal Nehru University after Vice-Chancellor Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit faced backlash over remarks made in a recent podcast interview.
In the interview, released earlier this month, Pandit spoke about caste equity regulations and social justice discourse, saying that communities “cannot progress by being permanently a victim or playing the victim card.” Student organisations, including the Jawaharlal Nehru University Students' Union, alleged that the remarks were “casteist” and insensitive to historically marginalised communities. The union demanded her resignation and organised campus protests, with demonstrations intensifying over the past week.
Pandit has denied the allegations, stating that her comments were taken out of context and were aimed at what she described as “woke politics,” not at Dalits or any specific community. She has also publicly said she comes from a Bahujan background and does not hold casteist views.
The controversy has added to existing tensions on campus, where administrative decisions and disciplinary actions in recent months have already drawn criticism from sections of students and faculty.
Who is Santishree Dhulipudi Pandit?
Pandit was appointed Vice-Chancellor of JNU in February 2022, becoming the first woman to hold the post at the university. JNU, one of India’s premier central universities, functions under the Ministry of Education, with the President of India serving as its Visitor.
An alumna of JNU’s School of International Studies, Pandit holds a PhD in International Relations and has previously taught at institutions including Savitribai Phule Pune University. Over her academic career, she has been associated with higher education policy bodies such as the University Grants Commission (UGC) and has written extensively on political science and foreign policy.
Her tenure at JNU has been marked by debates over campus governance, entrance examinations, and student politics, issues that frequently place the university administration and student groups at odds, reports said.
