Indore Police arrested a mechanic following the death of his 40-year-old wife on January 9, after post-mortem findings contradicted his initial account of the incident.
The case, under investigation by Aerodrome police station, initially appeared as an accidental death when the husband transported his wife's body to Government Maharaja Yashwantrao Hospital.
The accused said that his wife had suffered a fatal fall at their residence after experiencing a sudden spike in blood pressure, Deputy Commissioner of Police Shrikrishna Lalchandani told PTI.
Medical examination results, however, determined strangulation as the actual cause of death, prompting investigators to intensify their questioning of the husband.
During interrogation, the suspect admitted to killing his wife, claiming an eight-year period without sexual relations had generated resentment, according to Lalchandani's statement to the press agency.
"However, the post mortem report stated the cause of death as strangulation. The deceased's husband broke down during questioning and confessed to the murder. The accused, a mechanic, has claimed his wife refused to have sex with him for the past eight years, which had caused anger," Deputy Commissioner of Police Shrikrishna Lalchandani said.
Police took the accused into custody Sunday. The investigation continues as authorities examine additional aspects of the case, the deputy commissioner confirmed Monday.
