Bangalore International Airport (BIAL) will allocate around 31 acres of land to IndiGo to develop a second maintenance, repair and overhaul (MRO) facility for the airline’s expanding fleet, for which a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) was signed on May 30.
Pieter Elbers, CEO of IndiGo said, “This partnership with BIAL is a strategic step to boost IndiGo’s MRO capabilities and strengthen Bengaluru as a global aviation hub.”
The upcoming state-of-the-art facility at Kempegowda International Airport will be equipped to handle both narrow-body and wide-body aircraft, enhancing IndiGo’s maintenance capabilities and operational footprint in Bengaluru.
Karnataka Industries Minister MB Patil said Bengaluru is set to become Asia’s MRO hub, highlighting the state’s growing aviation infrastructure and commitment to industrial growth and skilled job creation.
"IndiGo’s upcoming MRO facility, spread over 31 acres with an investment of over Rs 1,100 crore, is a major boost to India’s civil aviation sector and reinforces Bengaluru’s position as a global aviation hub" said Patil.
The facility will include four hangars for wide- or narrow-body aircraft, a paint hangar, and support for IndiGo’s growing fleet, including A320/A321XLR and A350s, as well as codeshare partners’ aircraft.
The facility will draw global OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers, boosting ancillary industries and regional skill development. With major players like Air India, TASL, HAL, and IndiGo expanding MRO ops, Karnataka is emerging as Asia’s aviation hub, said Patil.
Hari Marar, MD & CEO of BIAL said, “IndiGo setting up its MRO at BLR Airport strengthens our partnership and highlights Bengaluru’s growing role as an aviation hub.”
With a fleet of over 400 aircraft, the new MRO facility will offer significant advantages in terms of aircraft availability, cost efficiency, and faster turnaround times - benefiting both the airline and its customers. The development will also contribute to strengthening Karnataka’s growing aerospace and defence ecosystem. IndiGo already operates one MRO facility each in Delhi and Bengaluru.
"The project will create over 750 skilled jobs and boost Bengaluru airport’s capacity to handle 1,300 aircraft by FY31, scaling to 2,100 by FY37/38" said Patil. "The facility will draw global OEMs and Tier-1 suppliers, boosting ancillary industries and regional skill development. With major players like Air India, TASL, HAL, and IndiGo expanding MRO ops, Karnataka is emerging as Asia’s aviation hub", said Patil
The MoU also outlines a broader collaboration between IndiGo and BIAL in areas such as network expansion, infrastructure development, and joint marketing initiatives. This partnership reflects the strategic intent of both entities to enhance aviation infrastructure and position Bengaluru as a key hub for domestic and international passenger and cargo operations.
