Three police officials in Bihar have been suspended after a jewellery store worker alleged that he was brutally assaulted in custody and petrol was poured on his private parts to force a confession in a theft case, according to an NDTV report.

The man, along with two colleagues, was detained in December in connection with the alleged theft of 60 grams of gold from a jewellery shop in Samastipur. Police later released him due to a lack of evidence linking him to the theft.

After spending four days in police custody, the man’s health reportedly deteriorated soon after he returned home. He is currently in critical condition.

As per the complaint, even before police custody, the jewellery shop owner had allegedly thrashed the worker and other employees and threatened to throw them off the roof. The three men were taken into custody by the police on December 31.

During his detention, the worker alleged that he was repeatedly beaten and tortured, including having petrol poured on his private parts. As his condition worsened, he was released on bond on January 5, the report said.

The police have also been accused of demanding a bribe for his release. The man’s mother claimed that her son was falsely framed and alleged that she and her husband were also detained at the Tajpur police station for three days. She said the police demanded Rs 50,000 to release family members.

She further alleged that the family’s house was searched, but no stolen jewellery was found. Despite this, her son continued to be assaulted and pressured to confess, the family claimed.

Following the allegations, Samastipur Superintendent of Police Arvind Pratap Singh ordered the suspension of three officials, including the station in-charge. Those suspended are the station in-charge Shankar Sharan Das, Rajvansh Kumar, and Rahul Kumar.
