A First Information Report (FIR) has been registered against TMC leader Mahua Moitra at Mana Camp police station in Raipur, Chhattisgarh, officials confirmed on Sunday.
The FIR, filed on August 30 based on a complaint by local resident Gopal Samanto, invokes Sections 196 and 197 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). The move comes after Moitra reportedly made a controversial statement against Union Home Minister Amit Shah, suggesting his head “should be cut off” for failing to stop the infiltration of illegal Bangladeshis into India, ANI reported.
Political backlashThe remarks triggered sharp reactions across party lines.
Congress leader TS Singh Deo condemned the alleged comment, saying: “I have not read the statement. But if Mahua Moitra ji has made such an objectionable remark against the Home Minister, this is not right.”
BJP leader Nitin Nabin hit back strongly, alleging that the remark exposed the “violent mindset” of the TMC: “The use of such words shows the restlessness in Bengal. Our Home Minister has everyone’s blessings, no one can harm him.”
Chhattisgarh CM’s demand to Mamata BanerjeeChhattisgarh Chief Minister Vishnu Deo Sai also stepped in, urging West Bengal CM and TMC supremo Mamata Banerjee to take strict action against Moitra.
In a post on X, Sai called the statement a 'serious criminal act' and demanded a public apology:
“Such audacity would not be possible without the backing of the Trinamool Congress high command. Mamata Banerjee should clarify whether she agrees with Mahua Moitra’s statement. If not, she must act against her and apologise to the entire country.”
Moitra, known for her sharp attacks on the BJP leadership, was expelled from the Lok Sabha in December 2023 after the Ethics Committee recommended her removal in the cash-for-query case.
