Confident Group Chairman Dr CJ Roy died by suicide on Friday at his office in Bengaluru, shortly after being questioned by officials from the Income Tax Department in connection with an ongoing probe into his business entities, NDTV reported.

The incident took place at the company’s Langford Road office, where Roy had arrived earlier in the day to record a statement for tax authorities. Officials had been examining him in relation to documents seized during recent searches conducted on firms linked to the Confident Group.

Income Tax raids on companies associated with Roy were first carried out in the first week of December. In the days that followed, investigators continued to question him to seek explanations regarding financial records and materials recovered during the searches. Roy had previously appeared before officials in Kerala and later informed them that he would be available for further questioning in Bengaluru after returning from Dubai.

On Thursday morning, the Income Tax Department conducted fresh raids on businesses linked to Roy. During these operations, officials allegedly detected assets that were disproportionate to his declared sources of income, prompting further questioning.

On Friday, Roy was accompanied to the office by Confident Group Managing Director TA Joseph. After reaching the premises, Roy went into his cabin to engage with officials. According to Joseph, Roy later expressed a desire to speak to his mother. Joseph then stepped out of the room.

Soon after, security personnel informed Joseph that Roy had instructed them not to allow anyone into the cabin. When repeated attempts to contact him went unanswered, staff members realised that the door had been locked from the inside. The door was subsequently forced open.

Roy was found seated in his chair and unresponsive, with bloodstains visible on his shirt. An ambulance was immediately summoned, but medical personnel found no signs of life upon arrival. He was taken to Narayana Hospital in HSR Layout and rushed to the emergency department, where doctors declared him dead.

Police have taken note of the incident and further procedures are underway.
