  • Businessman's SUV fired at in Rohini after Rs 3 crore extortion threats
  • Attackers fired at least 30 rounds at the parked vehicle
  • Police suspect gangster Himanshu Bhau's syndicate may be involved in the attack

In a daring extortion bid, motorcycle-borne assailants opened indiscriminate fire at a businessman's car parked outside his residence in Rohini on Friday evening. According to police, at least 30 rounds of shots were fired at the property dealers parked SUV by the three armed attackers.

The attack comes just days after the businessman, who is involved in the cardboard and real estate businesses, received an extortion call demanding Rs 3 crore.

The businessman reportedly received several threatening WhatsApp calls and voice messages between December 26 and 29 from an unidentified international number, with the sender claiming to be a gangster.

According to an officer, the Rohini resident received a voice message shortly after the shootout in which the sender allegedly warned that his family would be the next target. He was told while it was the newly-purchased SUV (blue Toyota Innova) that was targeted, it could be his wife and children if he did not pay the demanded money.

A call was made at Begumpur police station at 5.23 pm, with the caller saying that three people on a motorcycle fired shots at his parked car in Sector 24 and fled.

"No injuries were reported, though empty cartridges were found on the road. Police personnel reached the spot at Sector 24, Rohini, where a blue SUV was found with bullet marks on its front windshield," an officer said.

The realtor told police that between December 26 and 29, a man who claimed to be a 'big gangster' made several calls, demanding about Rs 3 crore as extortion. However, the threats were not reported to at the time.

Investigators believe the audacious attack points to the re-emergence of gangster Himanshu Bhau, indicating that his syndicate may have resumed operations after a short lull. Bhau is suspected to be based in the United States. Police are also examining the possibility that a local gang invoked his name to extort money from the businessman.

The modus operandi, heavy use of gunfire, hints at involvement of Bhau gang.
