Flight operations at Delhi’s Indira Gandhi International Airport were disrupted on Monday morning as dense fog and smog enveloped the National Capital Region, sharply reducing visibility and impacting air traffic. Airport authorities said operations are currently being conducted under CAT III conditions due to the poor visibility, a situation that may lead to delays and cancellations.

More than 75 flights were affected, with several services delayed and some cancelled as airlines adjusted schedules to ensure passenger safety.

The Ministry of Civil Aviation issued a heavy fog alert for northern India, saying Delhi (DEL) and other airports in the region were experiencing dense fog that has severely affected visibility.

In a post on X, the ministry advised passengers to check their flight status with airlines before heading to the airport, monitor updates on airport websites or apps, and allow extra travel time. “Safety is our top priority. Our teams and air traffic control are working tirelessly to minimise disruptions,” the ministry said.

The Airports Authority of India also flagged possible disruptions, stating that dense fog conditions were prevailing across Delhi and several airports in northern India, leading to reduced visibility and potential impact on flight operations.

Delhi airport, in an advisory, said flight operations are being conducted under CAT III conditions due to dense fog, which could result in delays and cancellations.

Airlines, including IndiGo and Air India, issued advisories early in the morning, urging passengers to plan their journeys carefully and stay updated on flight status.

IndiGo said visibility had drastically reduced due to dense fog, impacting flight operations, and warned that some flights may be proactively cancelled during the day to prioritise safety and avoid extended waiting at the airport.

The airline also advised passengers to allow extra travel time due to slower road traffic and to check flight status before leaving for the airport. Passengers were informed they could rebook or claim refunds online in case of cancellations.

Dense fog gripped Delhi-NCR on Monday morning, sharply reducing visibility across several areas and creating difficulties for early commuters. The poor visibility conditions prompted authorities to issue advisories, warning of disruptions to transport services.

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued a yellow alert for fog in the national capital, advising residents to remain cautious. According to IMD data, Delhi recorded a minimum temperature of 8.2 degrees Celsius on Monday night.
