Ahead of Republic Day, woman caught using forged embassy number plate; wanted to enter diplomatic areas

Ahead of Republic Day, the Delhi Police Crime Branch has arrested a 45-year-old woman from Vasant Vihar for using forged number plates designed to resemble those of a foreign embassy.

According to the police, the arrest was made following a secret tip-off received by the Anti-Extortion and Kidnapping Cell. Acting on the information, a team laid a trap and intercepted the woman while she was driving an Innova car fitted with the fake diplomatic-style plates.

When stopped, the woman claimed that the vehicle belonged to a diplomatic mission. However, she failed to produce any valid documents to support her claim. During subsequent interrogation, she confessed to having the number plates forged to avoid routine police checks and to gain access to restricted and high-security diplomatic zones.

Police officials recovered the forged embassy-style number plates, the car, relevant documents, and her mobile phone from her possession. A case has been registered against her under relevant sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita.

Further investigation is underway to determine whether she acted alone or had assistance, and to ascertain if the vehicle was used for any other unlawful activities.

This comes just weeks after a car blast shook the national capital when an i20 exploded right outside the Red Fort Metro Station. Several arrests have since then been made in the case.
