India condoles Khamenei’s death
Separately, India’s Foreign Secretary Vikram Misri on Thursday signed a book of condolence at the Embassy of Iran in New Delhi on behalf of the Indian government following Khamenei’s death.
The gesture came even as New Delhi refrained from issuing a direct statement on the killing. Instead, the government reiterated its long-standing position that the crisis in West Asia should be resolved through dialogue and diplomacy.
Khamenei killed during Iran strikes
Khamenei died on February 28 in Tehran at the age of 86. He had served as Iran’s Supreme Leader since 1989, making him one of the longest-serving leaders in the region.
His death came during a major military operation targeting Iranian leadership and strategic sites. The United States and Israel carried out coordinated strikes on government and military locations in Tehran, including the compound where Khamenei was present.
The Iranian government confirmed his death on March 1 and announced a 40-day national mourning period. Funeral ceremonies are planned in Tehran and later in his hometown, Mashhad.
