British woman raped by 'Instagram friend' in Delhi hotel; 2 arrested

The incident happened in south-west Delhi's Mahipalpur area.

A man in Delhi was arrested for raping a British woman in a Mahipalpur hotel in the city, according to ANI.

One of the accused, identified as Kailash, had reportedly befriended the victim on Instagram.  His accomplice was arrested on charges of molestation, the Delhi police told ANI.

The information about the incident had been forwarded to the British High Commission.

"A man was arrested on charges of rape with a British woman in a Mahipalpur hotel in Delhi. His accomplice was arrested on charges of molestation. The woman who was friends with the man through social media had come to Delhi from the UK to meet him," Delhi Police said in a statement.

According to police officials, Kailash, a resident of Vasundhara, Mayur Vihar, East Delhi, makes Instagram reels. A few months ago, he connected with the woman, a London resident, through the social media platform.

The woman was on a visit to Maharashtra and Goa when she contacted Kailash and invited him to meet her. However, Kailash expressed his inability to travel and instead asked her to visit Delhi.

According to NDTV,  Kailash works at a private firm. The woman has told police that he struggled to speak English and used Google Translate to communicate with her.

An Israeli tourist, along with a homestay owner, was recently gang-raped in Karnataka by three men. The incident occurred when a group of travellers was stargazing near the canal situated near the UNESCO World Heritage site of Hampi. All three suspects have been arrested.
