A man in Bihar has been arrested after two women accused him of marrying them at different points without divorcing either of them.
The issue came to light when the first and second wives of the accused went to the police together and submitted written complaints.
Police identified the man as Pintu Barnwal. According to the FIR, he married Khushboo Kumari in December 2022. Khushboo alleged that her family gave Rs 3 lakh in cash and jewellery at the time of the wedding.
She told police that she was later harassed over dowry and was also physically assaulted. She said she was eventually forced to leave the house.
Khushboo later found out that Pintu had married another woman in April 2024. She also alleged that he went on to marry a third woman without ending his earlier marriages.
The second wife, Gudia Kumari, told police she did not know about Pintu’s first marriage at the time of her wedding. She alleged that cash and jewellery were demanded during the marriage and afterwards as well.
Police said both women alleged cruelty when the demands were not met.
While in custody, Pintu denied the allegations. He claimed he remarried due to “family compulsions", saying his 60-year-old mother suffers from heart disease and diabetes and needs care.
He also alleged that his first two wives did not do household work. He accused his first wife of trying to attack him and his mother with a knife. He said the allegations of violence and sexual assault in the FIR were “false".
Police said Pintu was produced before a court and sent to jail.
Officials said his third wife is currently staying at his house.
