After voting for the two-phase Bihar Assembly election ends at 6 pm on November 11, all eyes will be on the exit polls. The counting of votes will be held on November 14.
Voting for 122 of the 243 assembly seats will end after a fiercely fought contest marked by sharp rhetoric, caste equations, and competing claims of governance and development in the state.
Seats voting in the first phase last week recorded a provisional voter turnout of 64.66 per cent, the highest in the state's history.
There are a total of 7.42 crore voters in Bihar, of which 3.92 crore are males and 3.5 crore are women.
Numbers in Bihar assemblyIn the 243-member Assembly, the NDA currently holds 131 seats—BJP 80, JD(U) 45, HAM(S) 4, and there is support from two Independents. Meanwhile, the Opposition INDIA bloc controls 111, led by RJD (77), followed by Congress (19), CPI(ML) (11), and CPI(M) and CPI with two each.
In a high-octane campaign that ended on Sunday, prominent leaders of both the NDA and Mahagathbandhan, including me Minister Narendra Modi, Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath, RJD leader Tejashwi Yadav, Leader of the Opposition (LoP) in the Lok Sabha Rahul Gandhi, and Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, held rallies across the state.
Prashant Kishor's Jan Suraaj Party and Asaduddin Owaisi's AIMIM are also in the fray. In 2020, the MIM won five seats in 2020 in Seemanchal, the region voting in the second phase.
While Nitish Kumar is eyeing a fifth consecutive term, the Mahagathbandhan is seeking votes on anti-incumbency, misgovernance and job promises.
Exit polls are surveys conducted immediately after voters leave polling stations. It aims to assess electoral trends before official results are announced. They provide a snapshot of voter behavior, analysing factors such as demographics, economic concerns, and political preferences. However, while exit polls can offer early insights, their accuracy can vary based on sample size, methodology, and voter responses.
How are exit polls conducted?Exit polls involve the following steps:
Polling organisations select a diverse set of polling stations to reflect the demographic and political makeup of voters. Respondents answer questions about their vote, demographic details such as age and gender.
Trained pollsters collect responses outside polling stations, maintaining voter anonymity.
The data is then adjusted for turnout discrepancies and demographic imbalances to project results. Projections are then released with margins of error, often by media organisations, after polling ends.
