In his resignation letter, Bhupen Kumar Borah raised serious questions surrounding allegations involving APCC president Gaurav Gogoi and his visits to Pakistan.

According to News18, Borah sent his resignation letter to Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge and wrote to Rahul Gandhi. In the letter, he flagged what he described as the damaging impact of the BJP’s allegations against Gogoi regarding his visits to Pakistan.

“Moreover, the gravest injury has arisen from the serious allegations levelled by the BJP against APCC President Gaurav Gogoi regarding his visits to Pakistan," Borah wrote as quoted by News18.

According to Borah, “the image of the Congress stands gravely impaired” after following Gogoi’s “failure to offer a clear and unequivocal response to the serious allegations concerning alleged links with Pakistan”.

He also questioned internal party dynamics. “Why I appear to have been subjected to marginalisation at the hands of Sri Gaurav Gogoi and Sri Rakibul Hussain,” he said.

According to the News18 report, Borah blamed what he termed “highhandedness" by Gogoi for his decision to step down.

Borah said he was being ignored within the state unit and that the functioning of the party had affected his self-esteem and dignity.

Borah, who served as Assam Congress president from 2021 to 2025 and was replaced by Gogoi last year.

In Guwahati, senior Congress leaders duing later half of Monday said that Borah had reconsidered his decision following intervention by the party high command.

AICC Assam in-charge Jitendra Singh toled news agencies that party president Mallikarjun Kharge and senior leader Rahul Gandhi had spoken to Borah. "The party leadership has discussed the matter with Borah," he said.

According to Singh, Gandhi also spoke to Borah for "15 minutes".

The development comes just days before Priyanka Gandhi’s scheduled visit to Assam and was being  seen as a significant blow to the party’s preparations ahead of the upcoming elections.

Assam chief minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on Monday invited orah to join the BJP. The CM said the BJP’s doors were open for Borah and promised to help him get elected from a “safe seat” if he joined.
