After AAP's significant defeat in the recent elections, the party appointed former Delhi chief minister Atishi as the Leader of Opposition in the Delhi Assembly today. This is the first time a woman has held this role, and for the first time in history, a woman Leader of Opposition will challenge a woman Chief Minister in the upcoming assembly session.
The BJP established the government on Wednesday, appointing Rekha Gupta, the Shalimar Bagh MLA, as Delhi's chief minister, making her the fourth woman to hold the role in the city.
Meanwhile, Atishi was appointed as the Leader of Opposition at AAP's legislative meeting today.
"...In the legislative party meeting today, it has been unanimously decided that Atishi will be the leader of the opposition in the Delhi Assembly...In challenging times, Atishi has served the people of Delhi as the CM...AAP will fulfil the responsibility of a healthy opposition..." said AAP's Gopal Rai.
Atishi thanked Arvind Kejriwal, the national convenor of Aam Aadmi Party, and the Legislative Party for trusting her.
"Thanks to Aam Aadmi Party's national convenor Arvind Kejriwal and the Legislative Party for trusting me. A strong Opposition raises the voice of the people. The Aam Aadmi Party will fulfil all the promises made by BJP," Atishi said.
After 27 years, the BJP regained power in the national capital in the February 5 elections, winning 48 out of 70 assembly seats. AAP secured 22 seats, while Congress failed to win any.
