In a winter session dominated by sharp exchanges and walkouts, an unscripted moment on the Lok Sabha floor briefly changed the mood.
Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, during Question Hour on Thursday, publicly told Union Road Transport and Highways Minister Nitin Gadkari that she had been seeking an appointment with him since June to discuss projects linked to her parliamentary constituency. What followed was immediate and unusual.
A public ask, an instant answer
Raising a question on the Chandigarh–Shimla highway, Priyanka Gandhi ended her intervention with a smile and a candid appeal: she had been trying to get time with the minister for months but had not succeeded.

Gadkari’s response cut through protocol. He told her no appointment was needed and invited her to come to his office right after Question Hour. The exchange drew attention across the House precisely because such access is rarely granted in real time.
From the House to the office
Minutes later, Priyanka Gandhi walked into Gadkari’s office within the Parliament complex. According to people present, the meeting focused on six road projects passing through Kerala, including works linked to her Wayanad constituency.

Gadkari clarified that some projects fall under the Kerala government’s jurisdiction, limiting the Centre’s role, but assured her that others would be examined.
Laughter across party lines
The conversation wasn’t all policy.
At one point, Gadkari joked about having recently met Rahul Gandhi regarding road projects in Rae Bareli. “If I did your brother’s work and not yours, you would complain,” he quipped, prompting laughter in the room.
Priyanka Gandhi, projecting confidence ahead of Kerala’s Assembly elections, responded that proposals under the Left Front government would be pursued when Congress returns to power in the state.
A personal touch in a political space
The meeting also featured an unexpected element: food.

Gadkari had prepared a rice dish, rice balls with chutney, after watching online videos, and offered it to visitors in his office that day. He insisted Priyanka Gandhi sample it, adding a distinctly human note to an otherwise formal interaction.
Why the moment mattered
The winter session has largely been marked by confrontation, with heated debates over pollution, employment schemes, and legislative changes. Against that backdrop, the Priyanka, Gadkari exchange stood outm not for policy outcomes, but for its tone.
It showed that even in a deeply polarised Parliament, public-interest issues can still cut through party lines, and that sometimes, access doesn’t come from files and follow-ups, but from asking the question out loud.
