Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Wednesday emphasised the need for India to develop artificial intelligence models that are not only effective domestically but also deployable globally. He stressed that as AI becomes more central to technology, measures to ensure authenticity, transparency and safety are essential.
“There should be authenticity labels on the content, if it’s real or generated by AI,” PM Modi said while speaking at AI Summit 2026, highlighting the growing challenge of distinguishing AI-generated material from genuine content. He underlined that watermarking and clear source standards must be implemented as AI increasingly creates text, images, and videos. “As AI creates more text, images and videos, we need watermarking and clear source standards,” he added.
PM Modi also raised concerns about the safety of young users online. “We need to be more aware of child-safety,” he said, calling for stronger awareness, safeguards, and policies to protect children from potential harm arising from AI tools and content.
The Prime Minister noted that India has the potential to set global benchmarks in AI while ensuring ethical use. By combining innovation with safety and transparency, India can create AI solutions that are globally relevant and socially responsible.
PM Modi's remarks come amid growing international discussions on AI ethics, regulation, and the need for verifiable content, reflecting India’s intent to balance technological advancement with user protection.
