
Tata Sons chief N Chandrasekaran on Thursday described artificial intelligence as the “biggest opportunity” for the technology sector and the IT industry, outlining the Tata Group’s expansive plans to embed AI across its businesses.
Speaking about the group’s strategy, the Tata Sons Chairman said, “This is the biggest opportunity for tech sector and IT industry.” He emphasised that AI would significantly reshape public services and enterprise operations. “AI will have a huge impact on public service delivery,” he said, adding that the “IT industry's real value is context and understanding every enterprise.”
Detailing the conglomerate’s roadmap, Chandrasekaran said Tata Group is integrating artificial intelligence across the entire technology stack. “Tata Group is adopting AI across the stack from silicon to systems to AI-ready data centres, applications and AI agents,” he said.
He noted that the scale of ambition would require global collaborations. “This will require us to work with world-leading partners in India and across the globe,” he said.
Announcing a major partnership, Chandrasekaran said, “I am happy to announce that we have partnered with OpenAI to announce the first 100 MW capacity to scale to 1GW.” The collaboration signals the group’s intent to build substantial AI infrastructure capacity.
He also revealed plans for a data-driven AI platform rooted in India’s diversity. “We are building AI data insights platform, what we are building is base don diverse Indian datasets, so that intelligence is available across diversity of Indian data sets,” he said.
In addition, Tata Group plans to roll out industry-specific AI solutions. “We will build agentic industry solutions across industries,” Chandrasekaran said, indicating that the focus would be on creating AI systems capable of autonomous decision-making tailored to different sectors.
Chandrasekaran reiterated that artificial intelligence presents an unprecedented growth avenue for the IT industry, stressing that contextual knowledge and enterprise understanding would remain at the core of value creation in the AI era.
Tata Consultancy Services, the IT services arm of the Tata Group, on February 19 announced a multi-layered strategic partnership with OpenAI to accelerate artificial intelligence adoption across enterprises, consumer platforms and social impact programmes in India and international markets.
The alliance will focus on embedding AI-driven innovation within Tata Group companies, launching joint go-to-market initiatives for global clients and building large scale AI infrastructure in India.
Under the agreement, several thousand employees across the Tata Group will be provided access to Enterprise ChatGPT to boost productivity and foster innovation. TCS will also integrate OpenAI’s Codex tools into its workflows to enhance software development efficiency and engineering outcomes.
