
Prime Minister Narendra Modi on Friday, stressing on the need to go big on future technologies, said his government's focus on semiconductors are driven by the urgent need to think about on emerging technologies and it will shape global domain of technology.
Delivering the keynote address at Network 18 Rising Bharat Summit, the PM said his government's focus on newer technologies will help the nation in future and place India among the global tech leaders. "We are building semiconductors facilities, drone technology, critical minerals mining. 2047 target is not a political decision," PM Modi stated during his address.
PM Modi will inaugurate a major semiconductor assembly and testing facility by Micron Technology in Gujarat's Sanand on Saturday, February 28. The project, backed by an investment of Rs 22,516 crore, is a major step in India's plan to become a hub for advanced electronics manufacturing. The plant, located near Ahmedabad, is being called India's first large-scale semiconductor fabrication-linked facility.
The Sanand plant will produce solid-state drives (SSDs), DRAM, and NAND memory products, which are essential for smartphones, computers, data centers, and servers. The launch coincides with rising global demand for AI-driven technology, which depends on high-performance memory and storage.
Semiconductors are fundamental to today’s digital economy, powering everything from smartphones and automobiles to defense and medical devices. India has made remarkable progress in strengthening its semiconductor ecosystem, driven by the vision of Aatmanirbhar.
With the launch of the India Semiconductor Mission and an outlay of Rs 76,000 crore, several fabrication and design facilities have been established, propelling the country towards technological leadership and reduced import dependence.
Recent government approvals and investments signify India’s emergence as a global hub for electronics and semiconductor manufacturing, underscoring its commitment to self-reliance and innovation.
