Sister of Sujata Handi, also known as Vijayalakshmi, the BJP worker who was allegedly assaulted in Karnataka's Hubballi, has recounted what went on before her sister faced the ordeal.
While speaking to news agency ANI, she said, "... We were sitting outside our house when around 30 policemen arrived. They took Sujata and all of us inside. Sujata was brutally assaulted, and her clothes were torn. Both ladies and gents police officers were present, and we pleaded with them to leave us. They dragged her inside the vehicle..."
Meanwhile, ANi quoted the victim's mother said, "... We were outside our house when a group of policemen arrived and asked us to come with them. We asked why, what we had done. They dragged my daughter into the vehicle, and the inspector abused us..."
The woman who was assaulted has alleged that she was assaulted by police personnel while being taken into custody during a protest, an incident that has come to light after a video surfaced online. The footage shows the woman worker surrounded by police personnel inside a bus.
According to NDTV, the woman claimed that she resisted her detention and raised objections, following which she was allegedly assaulted by the police and her clothes were torn during the process.
Preliminary information suggests that the woman was detained based on a complaint filed by Congress corporator Suvarna Kalkuntla. The complaint accused the activist, Sujatha, also known as Vijayalakshmi Handi, of bringing SIR–BLO officials to the area, India Today reported.
The complaint in the matter is linked to an earlier dispute between Congress and the BJP workers during the voter list revision exercise in Keshwapur Rana. The dispute originated from accusations that she had assisted officials in deleting certain voter names, a charge she denies, which led to clashes between Congress and BJP workers.
