Golmaal Again takes over all releases of the fortnight with collection of Rs 168 cr at box office

While Bollywood is celebrating the success of Golmaal Again, analysts feel it has overshadowed some other good films

Be it the huge star cast or the mindless comedy, but Rohit Shetty’s Golmaal Again sure knows how to pack a punch. Having collected a whooping Rs 168 crore by the second weekend at the box office, the film is running fast towards touching Rs 200-crore mark.

With Rs 7.25 crore collected on the second Friday of release and Rs 10.61 crore and Rs 13.58 crore on Saturday and Sunday, respectively, this Diwali release has taken over all the releases of the fortnight.

Golmaal Again is what we call a paisa vasool movie. The ensemble star cast and the entertaining content has worked well with the crowd. The film is here to stay and create more magic on the box office for at least another week,” said film trade analyst Atul Mohan.

“The movie will continue to do well in its third week too, and we would not be surprised if it makes it to the Rs 200-crore mark,” added Mohan.

While Bollywood is celebrating the success of Golmaal Again, analysts feel it has overshadowed some other good films. Secret Superstar, which released on the same day as Golmaal Again, has made only about Rs 48 crore by the end of its second weekend. The film that made close to Rs 40 crore in its opening week made another Rs 8 crore on the second weekend. The film would make a maximum of Rs 50-52 crore by the end of third week.

“Aamir Khan never goes wrong. He hasn’t this time as well. The content is superb and so is the cast and their performance. The release date is a strategic mistake because people somehow chose mindless entertainment over meaningful content,” added Mohan.

The fourth installment from the Golmaal franchisee didn’t just make Secret Superstar suffer, but also the releases of this week that included debutant film maker Atanu Mukherjee’s critically acclaimed film Rukh. The film that stars Manoj Bajpayee, Smita Tambe, Kumud Mishra and Adarsh Gourav in the lead failed to create any impact at the box office. Similarly, Howard Rosemeyer’s Jia aur Jia, starring Richa Chaddha and Kalki Koechlin could hardly leave a mark at the box office. The film made about Rs 7 crore by the end of the first weekend.

Once the Golmaal craze fizzles out at the box office, the much-awaited release of the year, Padmavati is expected to take over.
