Job postings in the information technology (IT) sector increased by 41.5 percent in Hyderabad and 24 percent in Bengaluru in April from the year-ago period, bucking the industry-wide hiring slowdown , job portal Indeed’s data shows.
There has also been a significant increase in clicks, with a 161 percent rise in job-seeker interest in Hyderabad and an 80 percent increase in Bengaluru.
Overall, there has been a decrease in IT job opportunities nationally, with job postings declining 3.6 percent in April 2024 from April 2023.
“Software and IT positions seem to be highly sought after, not just by those currently working in the field but also by individuals looking for new career opportunities. Despite the layoffs, the appeal of IT jobs has risen. This strong interest in IT could also be due to the extensive skill specialisation, training, and experience typically necessary for these roles,” said Sashi Kumar, Head of Sales of Indeed India.
Top four IT skills in demand are analysis, APIs, JavaScript, and SQL.
The hiring scenario in the industry reflects a general decline, with an estimated decrease of 35-40 percent, Viswanath PS, managing director and CEO of talent company Randstad India said.
Entry-level hiring has seen a significant reduction, especially due to a decline in campus hiring, he said. Contract staffing has been equally impacted. Projects requiring resources for shorter durations, such as six-nine months, have been slowing, possibly due to delays or uncertainties in project kick-offs, he said.
