Tata Power is evaluating developing small modular reactors as the company plans to enter the nuclear segment and is in the process of acquiring land parcels in some states, the company’s CEO and MD Praveer Sinha said on Wednesday.
“We are looking at SMRs (small modular reactors). SMRs are very expensive in terms of per megawatt capital costs. Secondly, there's not much experience in India in the private sector for such power plants. So we will definitely be looking at small size and there are certain technology players including NPCIL and some of foreign partners. We are in detailed discussion to understand technology, and scope of services we can offer,” Sinha said during a conference call.
The company is presently assessing the opportunity in three states and hopes to finalise the land in next 6-12 months.
“In nuclear we are still examining. The Act amendment has happened but a lot of regulations, rules, details still have to come out and the set of approvals that is required to set up nuclear plants. So we are waiting for more details to come,” Sinha said. “So we need to constantly engage with the government, department of atomic energy, and NPCIL to understand some of these things. Once we get better clarity we definitely start taking action on implementation of these projects,” he said.
Speaking on the recently announced India-US trade deal, Sinha said that the deal will open many opportunities including working with US companies on technology in the renewable and nuclear space. Moreover, the company will be examining opportunities in the thermal segment.
The company on Wednesday reported profit after tax of Rs 1,194 crore in the third quarter of fiscal year 2025-26 against Rs 1,188 crore in the same period of previous fiscal.
