The Supreme Court on May 17 agreed to grant three months extension for the demolition of Supertech's twin towers project in Noida. At the request of the demolition agency, Edifice Engineering, the apex court has granted time until August 28, 2022.
The demolition agency informed the apex court that it carried out test blasts on April 10 and that the demolition cannot be completed by May 22 as the twin towers' structures are stronger than was anticipated and sought more time to demolish the twin towers.
The bench of Justices DY Chandrachud and PS Narasimha after considering the application filed by Interim Resolution Professional (IRP) of Supertech seeking an extension of the timeline of May 22 and submission of amicus curiae Gaurav Agrawal passed the order directing to complete the demolition of both the towers by August 28 and sought a status report.

The status report submitted by NOIDA, inter alia, indicates that Edifice Engineering carried out a test blast, upon which it has redesigned the final building blast designs.
It has been stated that it may not be possible to demolish the entire structure finally by 22 May 2022 and time would be required until August 2022. It has been stated that the Director, CBRI, by a communication dated 11 May 2022, has also indicated that the work of final demolition may be carried out by 28 August 2022, the order said.
“In view of the expert opinion, time for completing the work of demolition is extended until 28 August 2022. A status report shall be filed by NOIDA after convening a meeting of all stake holders on the steps which are being taken between the date of this order and a week prior to the next date of listing,” the order said.
The applications have been listed on July 29, 2022.
The test blast was carried out on April 10 to determine the exact quantity of explosives needed to bring down the two 40-storeyed buildings in Noida that were declared illegal by the Supreme Court in August last year.
