India and Jordan have signed multiple agreements during Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s first visit to the Arab nation, expanding cooperation in renewable energy, water management, digital transformation and cultural exchange.
On December 15, Modi held talks with King Abdullah II in Amman and the two leaders reviewed the full spectrum of bilateral ties and agreed to deepen engagement across trade, investment, technology, defence, agriculture and people-to-people exchanges.
Both sides described the relationship as historic and underlined the need to translate political goodwill into tangible economic and developmental outcomes.
Modi is on a two-day visit to Jordan on the invitation of King Abdullah. His is the first full-fledged bilateral visit by an Indian Prime PM to Jordan in 37 years and comes as India and Jordan commemorate the 75th anniversary of diplomatic ties.
The two sides signed several memorandum of understanding and agreements.
These included an MoU on technical cooperation in new and renewable energy, an agreement on cooperation in water resources management and development, a twinning arrangement between the heritage sites of Petra and Ellora, and the renewal of the Cultural Exchange Programme for the 2025–2029 period.
The two sides also signed a letter of intent on sharing digital transformation solutions at population scale, reflecting India’s growing role in exporting digital public infrastructure.
In their discussions, the leaders highlighted the potential to expand bilateral trade and investment ties, with Modi noting that India is among Jordan’s key trading partners. He also proposed closer collaboration in digital payments, including the possibility of linking Jordan’s payment systems with India’s Unified Payments Interface (UPI).
Cooperation in fertilisers and agriculture featured prominently, given Jordan’s role as a supplier of phosphatic fertilisers to India.
The talks also covered regional and global issues, with both leaders reiterating the importance of peace, stability and security in the region. They reaffirmed their shared commitment to combating terrorism and extremism in all forms and emphasised continued coordination on security matters.
Jordan is the first stop in Modi’s three-nation tour. He will also visit Ethiopia and Oman.
