If you’ve ever logged into IRCTC at 9.59 am, heart racing, only to realise the Tatkal option isn’t even showing up — that moment is brutal. And nine times out of ten, the reason is simple: Aadhaar isn’t linked to your IRCTC account.
The linking itself isn’t hard. It’s just one of those things no one thinks about until it’s suddenly urgent.
Why IRCTC insists on Aadhaar for Tatkal
Tatkal tickets are meant for genuine last-minute travellers, not bots or bulk booking agents. That’s why Indian Railway Catering and Tourism Corporation made Aadhaar verification compulsory for Tatkal bookings.
No Aadhaar link, no Tatkal button. Everything else works, but Tatkal stays locked.
Before you start, do a quick reality check
Save yourself frustration and make sure:
You know your IRCTC user ID and passwordYour Aadhaar mobile number is active (this matters more than people realise)Your Aadhaar details roughly match your IRCTC profileIf your Aadhaar OTPs don’t come through, nothing else will work.
How people actually link Aadhaar to IRCTC
Log in to your IRCTC account. Don’t rush — this isn’t a Tatkal race.
Once you’re in, go to My Account and look for Link Your Aadhaar or Authenticate User.
Enter your 12-digit Aadhaar number carefully. One wrong digit and you’ll end up retrying five times.
You’ll get an OTP on the mobile number linked to Aadhaar. Enter it, submit, and wait a few seconds.
If everything lines up, you’ll see a message confirming that Aadhaar is linked. No further action needed.
Not sure if you already did this years ago?
A lot of people forget they’ve already linked Aadhaar.
Log in to IRCTC and open My Account. If Aadhaar is already linked, it will show as verified. If not, the option to link it will still be sitting there.
It’s worth checking now instead of finding out at 10:01 am.
The usual things that trip people up
The most common issue is a name mismatch. If your Aadhaar says “Ravi Kumar Singh” and IRCTC says “Ravi K S”, it often works. If the names are completely different, it won’t.
The second big problem is the mobile number. If your Aadhaar is linked to an old number you no longer use, OTPs won’t arrive. This isn’t an IRCTC problem — Aadhaar needs to be updated first.
Trying again and again without fixing these usually just leads to wasted time.
Does this affect normal bookings?
No. You can book regular tickets without Aadhaar linking.
This only blocks Tatkal bookings, which is why people discover the issue only when they’re already stressed.
Bottom line
If you ever depend on Tatkal tickets, link Aadhaar to your IRCTC account when you’re not in a hurry. Do it once, check that it’s verified, and forget about it.
Because nothing is worse than losing a Tatkal seat to a missing checkbox.
