For years, most of us carried Aadhaar in the form of a folded paper printout, a laminated copy from a local shop, or just a soft copy on our phone. Then the PVC Aadhaar card arrived, looking and feeling like a proper identity card. Credit card-sized, sturdy and neatly printed, it has become increasingly popular. But what exactly is it, and do you need one?
What is a PVC Aadhaar card
The PVC Aadhaar card is an official Aadhaar printed on polyvinyl chloride plastic by the Unique Identification Authority of India. It is compact, durable and designed to be more convenient than the older paper version.
Unlike laminated copies made by local vendors, this card is printed and delivered directly by UIDAI. It includes security features such as a secure QR code, hologram, micro text, ghost image and issue and print dates.
In simple terms, it is still the same Aadhaar number. Only the format has changed.
Is it different from your regular Aadhaar
Legally, no. Your Aadhaar number remains the same whether it is printed on paper, downloaded as an e-Aadhaar, stored in mAadhaar or issued as a PVC card. All formats are equally valid under the Aadhaar Act.
That means you cannot be denied a service just because you do not have the PVC version. A black-and-white printout of e-Aadhaar is valid too.
The PVC card is mainly about convenience and durability. It fits into your wallet and does not tear easily. For people who use Aadhaar frequently for KYC or identification, that makes a difference.
How to apply and what it costs
You can order a PVC Aadhaar card online through the official UIDAI website. The fee is Rs 50, which includes printing and Speed Post delivery.
You do not need to visit an enrolment centre unless you are updating details. If your mobile number is registered with Aadhaar, you can authenticate using an OTP. If not, there is a non-OTP option available using other details.
Once ordered, the card is printed and sent to your registered address.
When it makes sense to get one
If your current Aadhaar copy is faded, torn or laminated poorly, a PVC card is a cleaner alternative. It is also useful for elderly family members who prefer a sturdy card rather than managing digital copies.
However, if you rarely carry Aadhaar physically and mostly use digital verification or masked Aadhaar copies, you may not feel the need for it.
The bottom line
A PVC Aadhaar card is not a new ID. It is simply a more durable format of the same Aadhaar. It does not give you extra benefits, faster service or special status.
Think of it as upgrading from a paper boarding pass to a proper plastic card. The identity stays the same. Only the packaging changes.
