Changed your salary bank? Update it with EPFO before it becomes a headache

Changed jobs or bank accounts? Don’t forget to update your details with EPFO — or your future withdrawals could get delayed

  • Update your EPFO bank details after switching salary accounts.
  • Employer approval is needed for EPFO bank detail changes.
  • Only one bank account can be linked to your UAN at a time.

You switched your salary account. Maybe your new employer insisted. Maybe you wanted better service or fewer charges. Either way, the change was done in a few clicks.

But here’s the part many people forget: EPFO still sends your provident fund money to the bank account linked to your UAN. If that account is closed or inactive, your claim can bounce back.

And you’ll only discover it when you’re trying to withdraw money.

Check this before you do anything

First, log into the EPFO Member e-Sewa portal and see what bank account is currently linked to your UAN. Many people assume it’s updated automatically when they change jobs. It isn’t.

Also check whether your Aadhaar is verified. If Aadhaar, PAN and bank details don’t match exactly — even a small spelling issue — updates can get rejected.

If something is mismatched, fix that first. Otherwise, the system won’t move.

How to change the bank account

Once logged in, go to the “Manage” section and click on “KYC.” You’ll see the bank account listed there.

Add your new account number and IFSC code carefully. Double-check the numbers — this is where most mistakes happen. Upload a clear image of a cancelled cheque if required.

After you submit it, the request doesn’t go straight through. It goes to your employer for approval. That’s the part people don’t realise.

If HR doesn’t approve it, nothing changes. So if it’s stuck, follow up with payroll instead of waiting endlessly.

Why this matters

If you file a withdrawal claim and the bank details are wrong, EPFO won’t process the payment. The claim may be rejected, and you’ll have to start again.

This becomes stressful when you’re withdrawing money after leaving a job or applying for a PF advance.

It’s much easier to update the account now, when there’s no urgency.

One important thing to remember

Only one bank account can be active under your UAN at a time. And your UAN does not change when you switch jobs — it stays with you for your entire career.

So whenever your salary bank changes, treat EPFO as part of the checklist.

It’s a five-minute task that saves weeks of frustration later.

FAQs

1.  Can I update my EPF bank account without employer approval?

In most cases, employer approval is required for KYC updates. Without it, the bank detail change will not be fully validated.

2.  Can I link more than one bank account to EPFO?

No. Only one primary bank account can be linked to your UAN for withdrawals at a time.

3.  What happens if I change jobs?

Your UAN remains the same. If your salary account changes with the new employer, you should update the bank details under your existing UAN to avoid delays in future claims.
