For investors chasing quick returns, sustainable wealth is built through patience, discipline, and the power of compounding instead of market noise, said Navneet Munot, MD of HDFC AMC on the sidelines of the Moneycontrol's Mutual Fund Summit 2026 – Ahmedabad Edition.
“To achieve satisfactory results is easier than you think. To achieve superior results is far tougher than what you think,” Munot said, underlining that most life goals can be met simply by staying invested for long periods with patience.
Munot stressed that wealth creation is not about income alone, but about what one does with that income. “In the long run, how much wealth you have does not depend on how much money you make. It depends on how much money your money makes,” he said, calling compounding the most underrated force in investing.
He added that great wealth is created through informed conviction rather than excessive diversification. “Great wealth is created by knowledgeable concentration. Moderate wealth by professional diversification. Ordinary wealth by excessive diversification. Wealth destruction happens through poor concentration or neglect,” Munot said.
Flagging common behavioural mistakes, Munot cautioned investors against falling into the traps of peer pressure, media noise and cognitive biases such as recency bias and the bandwagon effect. Pointing to the current rush towards gold and silver after their strong performance, he said investor attention typically shifts only after prices have already moved sharply.
“When everybody thinks something is good, we assume it must be good. That’s recency bias at work,” Munot said, urging investors to stay focused on long-term goals rather than short-term trends.
