The upcoming Navi Mumbai International Airport has been accorded a 3-letter location code as 'NMI', as per the International Air Transport Association (IATA) website on May 3.

A search on the IATA website showed up  'NMI' as the IATA code for Navi Mumbai's DB Patil International Airport, while Mumbai's existing international airport - the Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport (CSIA) - continues to carry the location code 'BOM'.

The airport code, also known as a location code, is a three-letter geocode assigned to airports and metropolitan areas around the world, defined by the IATA.

Last year in September, IATA had assigned 'DXN' as the location code for the upcoming Greater Noida international airport.

Civil Aviation Minister Jyotiraditya Scindia had said in January that the Navi Mumbai airport should get operational by the end of this year. "The airport's first flight will land in November or December. The airport will pave the way for the big development of Navi Mumbai," the Civil Aviation Minister had said, adding that in the next 10 to 15 years, at least 10 cities which will have two airports each.

The Navi Mumbai airport - being developed by the Adani Group - is a Rs 18,000 crore project, expected to be completed in five phases. By the final phase the project is expected to generate over one lakh jobs.
