Trading in the Capital Market (CM) segment will remain suspended on Thursday, January 15, 2026, following a trading holiday declared by exchanges on account of the Municipal Corporation elections in Maharashtra.
In a modified circular issued to market participants, NSE today said, “ In partial modification to Exchange circular reference no. NSE/CMTR/71775, the Exchange hereby notifies Thursday, January 15, 2026, as a trading holiday in Capital Market (CM) Segment on account of Municipal Corporation Election in Maharashtra.”
As per the earlier circular, the markets were to remain open, but it was a settlement holiday. Exchanges had already announced a holiday in the debt and currency derivatives segments. Equity and commodity sessions were earlier planned to remain open. However, NSE has now announced that the commodity segment will also be partially closed, with the morning session shut and only the evening session continuing from 5:00 PM to 11:55 PM.
The change could possibly be aimed at avoiding settlement burden on systems. As per the earlier plan, settlements for trades executed on January 14 and 15 were to be completed on January 16. In the past, sudden changes in holiday and settlement calendars have forced some sections of market participants, especially custodians, to work overnight to ensure smooth settlement. The issue prompted demand for protocol in case of last minute market holiday changes.
Municipal Corporation elections are being held across several key urban centres in Maharashtra, including Mumbai. The state government had announced January 15 as a holiday under the Negotiable Instruments Act, prompting the RBI to declare a bank holiday. Trading and settlement calendars are fixed in advance, but exchanges typically declare trading holidays during major state or local events following state government announcements.
