In the US markets, the Dow and S&P 500 had a lackluster as the indices wavered near key technical levels, but the Nasdaq managed to score a solid gain.

Dow Jones Industrial Average was up 0.04% or 4.39 points at 11989.83. Nasdaq Composite added 0.58% or 15.78 points at 2755.28. Standard & Poor's 500 rose 0.22% or 2.91 points at 1299.54.

In economic data, the pending home sales index surpassed expectations and rose 2% in December to settle at 93.7. Jobless claims surged from 51,000 to 454,000 as was reported by the labour department. Durable goods fell 2.5% below analysts' expectations, as reported by the commerce department.

The dollar traded near a 2-week high against the yen fuelled by reports that showed that economic growth had accelerated and consumer spending had risen.

Oil prices slipped nearly 2% on talks of OPEC raising output to cool prices and a rise in US jobless claims.

In the base metal space copper rose the most in two weeks on speculation that low US borrowing costs will buoy demand for industrial metals.
