Nifty bounces back after 5-day sell-off; Bharti, RIL lead

Equity benchmarks clawed back on the back of short covering, which was imminent after selling seen in previous five sessions. The Nifty inched up above the 5450 level. But there was a bit of profit booking at higher levels.

Equity benchmarks clawed back on the back of short covering, which was imminent after selling seen in previous five sessions. The Nifty inched up above the 5450 level. But there was a bit of profit booking at higher levels. Global cues were quite supportive in early trade - the US markets closed above psychological levels on Tuesday.


Among frontliners, Tata Motors, Reliance Industries, NTPC, TCS, SBI, ICICI Bank and Sterlite Industries were gainers in early trade.


However, Tata Steel fell 0.75% to Rs 627 as against issue price of Rs 610 a share. The company listed its 5.7 crore shares on exchanges, which issued via follow-on public offer in January.


Bharti Airtel tanked over 3% following disappointing numbers but managed to showed smart recovery in few minutes after opening trade.


Hero Honda and Maruti too were down.


At 9:17 hours IST, the 30-share BSE Sensex was trading at 18,222, up 200 points and the 50-share NSE Nifty was at 5,470, up 53 points.


The CNX Midcap rose 66 points to 7,842. About 592 shares advanced as against 95 shares declined on National Stock Exchange.


Midcap & Smallcap space:


Jet Airways was up 2.6% and Voltas up 0.3% ahead of numbers today.


Everest Kanto rose 2.25%. Jain Irrigation shot up 6% after a fall of 18% on Tuesday.


ICSA rallied 4% and Kingfisher Airlines was up 2%. Unitech gained 3%.


HDIL, IndusInd Bank, IOB, TVS Motor, Balrampur Chini, Bajaj Hindusthan and Shree Renuka were up 1-2%.


Delta Corp slipped further by 5%.

Global cues:


The S&P 500 Index closed above 1,300-mark for the first time since August 2008 and Dow Jones Industrial Average above 12,000 level for the first time since June 2008, post strongest single session gain in eight weeks.

The Dow Jones ended up 148 points at 12,040. The Nasdaq Composite was up 51 points at 2,751 and S&P 500 was up 21 points at 1,308.


Commodities


March crude oil contract was down 1.5% at USD 90.77/barrel


March natural gas contract fell 1.4% at USD 4.34 per MMBtu


Gold was up 0.4% at USD 1340.30 per ounce


March silver gained 1% at USD 28.51 per ounce


Baltic Dry Index was down 2%
